The VC one will be the cheaper and easier alternative, of course. My recommendation? If you own a WiiU, a Wii or a SNES go for the Super Nintendo (digital or physical) version. And, as I'm sure you know, that happens a whole fucking lot! They'll drive you nuts, man! It's like a 4 second load everytime you go in and out of the main menu and everytime you go in and out of every random battle. More than a decade ago a friend lent me his FFVI on PS1 copy and I never finished it because of those excruciating load times. I want to make one thing clear: SNES or GBA version have their ups and downs but they're good. The GBA one was just not in the cards for me. Go SNES or GBA but even with a slightly more polished translation and tweaks it still ain't enough for me since it's such a visual and, especially, musical downgrade over the SNES version that I can't make that compromise.Īnd this is coming from someone who didn't play FFVI until 2011 (on Wii VC) for the first time so nostalgic goggles ain't a factor for me. I totally understand if someone is totally repulsed by the new visual, but I urge the naysayers to give it a try if you can.

Beautiful portraits accompanying every dialogue. You don't have to use it, but if you don't feel like wandering until you find your next destination, a small tip can be very welcome.ġ1) Portraits. This is hardly earth shattering nowadays, but it's still pretty awesome to have Final Fantasy with you at all times.ĩ) A in-game help system is great for gamers short on patience. The RPG genre is very menu driven, which makes it perfect for touch screens.Ĩ) True portability. A soundtrack option lets you hear any music at any time.ħ) There's a reason why people love smartphones: touching what you want is infinitely superior than scrolling through options. I feel like the audio quality is better here, but I might be mistaken. This section lets you relive important plot points so you know what's going on if you put the game down for a while.Ĥ) A helpful Bestiary section displaying info on monsters and bosses.ĥ) Arguably the superior translation compared to the SNES version.Ħ) Audio is crystal clear. This improves the pacing a great deal, and makes going through random battles much more palatable, specially if you like to use Sabin.Ģ) A bunch of small tweaks that improves the experience. That said, eventually the new sprites grew on me, and the game did offer some gorgeous battle backgrounds, at least. Look, I think FFVI has some of the best sprite work of its era, so I get the hate, I really do. Let's take the bad out of the way first: they butchered the sprites. Before you start rolling your eyes and thinking I'm crazy, hear me out. I started another FFVI playthrough, and now that we are past the whole knee jerk reaction of the launch, I feel the mobile version is the best one available.
